To strengthen its rapidly expanding India team, Newsweek is hiring a Data Analyst who will play a central role in supporting the organisation’s city ranking methodology and data-driven editorial initiatives.


Job Overview

The Data Analyst will be responsible for collecting, validating, transforming, and analysing diverse datasets to ensure the accuracy and integrity of Newsweek’s ranking systems. This role directly contributes to the creation of high-quality, reliable rankings and supports editorial teams with data-driven insights.

Key Responsibilities

1. Data Collection & Processing

  • Collect, load, clean, and transform large datasets (economic, environmental, demographic, survey-based, and more).

  • Build and maintain data pipelines across multiple geographies and data sources.

  • Filter, structure, and organise data to support accurate city ranking outputs.

2. Data Architecture & Code Development

  • Support the development of the rankings database, including data structure design and master data management.

  • Write scripts in Python or R to automate data transformations within the ranking architecture.

  • Ensure data workflows are optimised, efficient, and well-documented.

3. Quality Assurance & Validation

  • Identify data anomalies, inconsistencies, and gaps.

  • Enforce strong data quality principles to maintain integrity across sources.

  • Work closely with researchers to validate datasets and integrate qualitative insights.

4. Research & Reporting Support

  • Provide quantitative support for desk research and expert panel evaluations.

  • Prepare analytical outputs for editorial teams, including visualisations, processed datasets, and ranking tables.

  • Present insights clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

5. Documentation & Transparency

  • Maintain detailed documentation for all data processes and methodologies.

  • Ensure reproducibility and transparency of all analytical workflows.


Key Deliverables

  • Cleaned, fully analysed datasets ready for ranking.

  • Ranking tables, supporting code, and analytical outputs.

  • Comprehensive documentation covering data methodology and processes.


Collaboration

  • Partner with the Researcher and R&R team to validate data and ensure accuracy.

  • Provide the Project Manager with timely, data-backed progress updates and risk assessments.

  • Work with editorial staff to ensure data is represented clearly and correctly across platforms.


Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong analytical mindset with a passion for problem-solving.

  • Ability to detect and correct data quality issues.

  • Proficiency in SQL (Postgres or similar database systems).

  • Working experience with Python, R, or other data science tools.

  • Ability to present insights to both technical and non-technical teams.

  • Strong communication, documentation, and collaboration skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a fully remote environment.
